what are the basic things of how onion-skin weathering goes?

the bullet points i was given were:
Rock weakened
Surface layers of rock peel off
Rock heated by sun and expands
Rock cools down and contracts

The only thing I know that connects onion skin and weather is the old folk stories that say that if the onion has a thick skin, a cold winter is due, but if the skin is thin, the winter will be mild. "Onion skin very thin, mild winter coming in". Only works with local grown onions though.
