for all four of us others. She is a nasty, nosy, petty person, and when I am confronted with her, I back down, but I wish I had a way to put her in her place...anyone else have this problem?

First thing you should be asking yourselves is whether you actually want to cope with her.
If she is as bad as you say, you should seriously consider activating a process of having her removed. If your manager is even semi-compitent, he will see that having her there and dragging everyone down is not exactly productive.

Try making friends.

I worked as a waiter at a restaurant in downtown Denver for a while a few years back. The money was fantabulous during the tourist season.

We had a prep cook there who was horrid to everyone. She always had something unpleasant to say and she always had a chip on her shoulder. She acted like everything was beneath her and she was a nasty one.

For the most part everyone avoided her. No one wants to be abused.

The staff at the restaurant was pretty close and we'd go out drinking, bowling partying etc etc on the weekends and she never joined us. Understand that no one ever invited her, but no one really invited anyone, plans would be discussed at work and whoever wanted to go would do so. No one really ever associated with her, so she never really knew what was going on.

When one of the guys got married he decided to invite everyone to a post-wedding party including Ms. Nasty...........

After that , I guess she felt more welcome to join us when we had something going on and it wasn't long before she was part of the group. Her nastiness melted away pretty quick.

She even started smiling once in a while =)

yes, definitely. There are several ways you can attempt to fix this problem. The first, is to try to "kill her with kindness", so to speak......some co workers just need a little TLC for them to be kind to others in return. Secondly, you can speak to your boss and explain what is going on. There are times that the boss does need to intervene. Thirdly, if it is too miserable for you to endure, you can look for a job elsewhere, or hope that this coworker is looking for a different job.

well I hate to sound like a rat but bring it to the attention of her supervisor... there are a few of those in my company too and granted I don't have to work right next to them I do have to transfer calls to them... it makes it very difficult to be upbeat and stay in a positive mood when I have to deal with people's attitudes here in the office. If she is like that with all of you then I would suggest that all of you bring to her supervisor. You shouldn't have to feel stressed out because of a co-worker... good luck.

Like all bullies she will continue until confronted. You already know what you should do. If you find it hard to confront her on your own ask a couple of your coworkers to join you. If you cant convince them then do what needs to be done. It'll only takes one good talk to get her to back down.

Just ignore her as best as possible. There are those type of people at any job you go to. Most of them are so insecure about themselves that they make it their duty to make everyone else's life miserable.

Go to your boss. If she is disrupting your work, the boss should know and will deal with it!
