i was talking to my friend in windows live messenger and he sent me a request for remote assistance..i clicked accept and i could see a screen shot of his computer?
did that mean i was directly connected to his computer?
could he enter my computer too?
is this secure??
what is this and what did i do?????

Remote assistance allows another user to connect to your computer to assist you. This user will/does have access to the computer - almost as much as if they were sitting in front of it. If you sent out a request, (or a hacker was out there), then yes, they could connect to your computer also.

It's somewhat secure, in that it is supposed to allow the setup of a password and you are supposed to authorize someone connecting, however, security is limited.

Remote Assistance is part of the remote desktop functionality of windows. You can disable it by following these instructions for Windows XP:

Right click on My Computer.
Left click on Properties.
Click the tab that says "Remote"
Under Remote Assistance, disable the options you choose.

yes, you were viewing his desktop.
no, only if you invite him.
yes, because you have to invite people
it's a system to help out other people, you can even remote control the PC on the other side. I sometimes use it to help out my more technically challenged friends.
