This is a total guess, but I'd say it's a connection with the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel. It would make sense, as in the Biblical story God separated man from one another and caused them to not understand each other (implying different languages were created), and in the film, the each storyline is from a different cultural and linguistic perspective, and much of the film has to do with people's inability to understand each other.
