I don't know just how cold it was but in February 1951 I attended the Outward Bound Sea School, Aberdovey North Wales for one month and we students all got dumped into the river Dovey at least once per day. We needed no other incentive to run back to our wooden huts to dry off and attempt to keep breathing.
We all enjoyed it afterwards....................
