Ultrasounds are very safe during pregnancy. There is no risk to the fetus like X-Ray. They won't normally perform an ultrasound for longer than an hour becuase of the increase in temperature to the amniotic fluid. But many women will have 5+ ultrasounds during pregnancy for determining gestation, fetal growth, fetal retardation, gender determination, and also for suspect breaches or conditions/concerns with the uterus.

Ultrasound has not been shown to have any negative effect on the baby, HOWEVER, having said that, keep in mind that ultrasound causes waves in the amniotic fluid and the baby can feel it. Especially if it's close to his/her ear, then it may sound like a subway train to the baby!
In any case, if there is no reason to monitor the pregnancy very-very closely, there's no need for frequent unltrasound sessions.

The number of ultrasounds during pregnancy that is safe is unlimited--every day if needed is just fine. Where the problem comes into play is if any given ultrasound is longer than an hour it can slightly increase the temp. inside the uterus and amniotic sac.

It's not unsafe.
Women who have multiples or high risk pregnancies can have an u/s once a week. During my pregnancies, my first was high risk, i got 5 sonograms. My 2nd weren't so bad so i got the standard 4 and with this one, i'll have by the end, 6 sonograms, but this one is also classed high risk.

i don't think anyone knows for certain. the medical community will tell you that they are completely safe, but they make money selling them. i've read about studies that claim the sounds waves emitted from loud music and loud work environments is harmful to your overall health ( not just your hearing). so, how is bombarding a somewhat fragile fetus with sound waves going to be good for it? i don't think that it is. i would keep them to a minimum if i were you. if there is an indication of a problem, it's probably worth it. but if it's just to satisfy your curiosity, i'd advise against it.
