Improving social skills can take some practice. Some basic tips are keeping eye contact with one or more persons you speak with, firm grip on handshaking, (hands that go limp are gross and also show the other person you could care less)this works with interviews also. Try to smile and stand up straight. If you look miserable and not feel it; people won't talk to you. Let's face it, do you want to strike up a conversation with someone who looks miserable? If you're shy, you can work through that. I personally used to be really shy and still am on occasion, but it's more about your body language and facial expressions.

The best way is to take a psychoeducational group regarding social skills. This will give you helpful information on how to interact with others. Also, role play is a useful tool when wanting to practice interactions with other people. Whether in therapy or with a friend, you can practice what you would do in social situations and try out things to see what works best.

Have have a problem with being shy and not confident in your abilities to hold a conversation, try some chat rooms and develope an ease with starting a conversation. Then take what you learned and apply it to real life.
If you want to simply better your skills, there are several books, videos and places on the net to get that info

There are a lot of books and courses, online and physical that you can use to train social skills.
I recommend anything by Dale Carnegie or his foundation as a starting point.
