People often use religion as a shield or mask. There was a "Decoding The Past: Cults" on The History Chanel it was stated that disturbed people often use religion as a hook to gather people and keep the under control.

In the 10 Comandments, it says "thou shall not kill". When people do such things, they think that If they ask for forgivness through the word of God. It says in the Bible that God is a forgiving God. So they think that after killing a mass number of people (knowing that it was wrong to begin with) that God will forgive them for killing off the things that he loves(His children) But personaly, I think it's a crock if they actually think that. They're just trying to find something to fall back on.

Religious dogma - they think they are killing for God - sacrifice - strange paradox but happens all the time.

They are trying to justify their acts of man inhumanity to man. And they feel that by doing that they are forgiven which they are not.............. Also to people like that do not really believe in God for to them God is just an excuse for them to continue to be evil.....................
