I am currently in Switzerland, from India, so as you can see, I can definitely tell you how long it takes. Actually, it more or less depends on the type of representative you are confronted with. A tough person, 1 month or two, maybe. An OK type person will give it to you by the time you need it, period. And, as you might have understood by now, an easy-going person will give it to you double-quick.

if in the UK, go to the High commission in Aldwych and get there at about 7am, you will be out by about 11am, leave it until 9 or 10 am and you won't have your visa until about 3 or 4 pm
For birmingham its in the jewellry quater, again get there early say 7:30, doors open at 9:30, but then you have to return at 3, Londons better, and for a 6 month multiple entry tourist visa it costs £30
temember to take 2 passport photos and you can pick up the application form there.
have fun

As you can see you already got variety of responses. The best thing to do is simply call the embassy, visa section adn they will tell you over the phone. If its Indian Embassy in Australia say then they will tell you approx 2 weeks . But thats if you can get through as the service is pathetic here.

Usually it can be done same day, in London it takes about 2 hours. You must check with your local Embassy/High Commission for opening hours (eg in London you must arrive before 12.00 midday or you will not be admitted). Check also for Indian Public Holidays. India has several major religions, and public offices (worldwide) may be closed for any of their major days.

Other non-routine applications include applying in a country where you are not a resident/citizen. Check well in advance: They may ask for documents you have to get from home. Non-routine applications may involve delays of hours, weeks or even months.

hi,
it depends on the type of visa you require... and also it depends on the states how long they need for verification. if your contacts are good and they can do fast process then it wont take more time, within 2-3 days.
