You will be able to print letters, etc. from your printer, but you'll undoubtedly find that photo quality ink cartridges are more expensive than normal ones.

Check in your manual to see if normal cartridges can be used with your printer. If the manual doesn't tell you, send an email to Canon asking the same question. (There's a 'Contact Us' option on the home page ... top right of the screen.)

I regret buying a photo printer, I prefer to burn pics to disc and get them done at a photo shop, its cheaper and I never get a bad print. Next time I'm going to buy a cheap laser printer for printing text, its cheaper than using the cartridges for a page of text. The cheap cartridges don't do good photos, skin tones are not as realistic. A good alternative is 'continuous ink system' if you do a lot of printing, you get big bottles of ink that feed into the cartridges. Its a lot cheaper.

This will print everyday things fine, a photo printer just means it will print photos in more detail than a standard printer.
