And how bad would it really have to be for you to want to do that?

I should add that I know what it means, I am just curious as to what would get you feeling so bad, you'd consider doing it?

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than lose one of my children. As far as that goes, I would rather stick pins in my eyes than lose anyone that I love.

The expression comes, I believe, from The Witches of Eastwick. Jack Nicholson says it.
Sticking pins in your eyes will always cause extreme pain and total blindness. So the alternative must be worse than permanent blindness.
I like phrases such as 'I'd rather swim in sewage' or 'I'd rather nail my balls to a burning building'.

As you stated it is a simple expression. It does not indicate that one would actually stick pins in ones eyes, but rather it is an over exagerated expression that means it is dreadful.

Yeah that's already a cliche :P yet i assume that's real... and in case you inquire from me the component at which braveness turns into insanity is once you purely bounce into something it relatively is surely the two frightening and pointless. particular, you're dealing with your fears, super! yet why bounce in front of the bus? it is not being courageous, that's being basic stupid.

No, but it's very likely that it could come from the play Oedipus Rex. At the climax where he finds that his wife (and also mother) has killed herself, he takes out the pins from her robe and puts his own eyes out. This he does out of grief and a sense of justice because he unknowingly caused all this misery.

yes i have. it means that whatever you are saying you dont want to do is worse than sticking a pin in your eye which would be very painful and make you go blind so whatever you are not wanting to do must be very bad

Could anything really be so bad that you would rather stick pins in your eyes? I think topping oneself painlessly would be more favourable.

I prefer to use the term "hot coals" instead of pins. And I have three words for you: Paris Hilton's Music.
