.as we have done towards Iran? (I know the U.S. wants to prevent "rogue" states from developing nuclear weapons.) And did the U.S. sign non-proliferation agreement?

yes the u.s signed the agreement .amd yet they own nukes and want to prevent others from getting it .its abolute hypocricy if you ask me .yes iran isnt too freindly to anyone but waht would they gain by going to war with the u.s or geting economic sanctions from the u.n?poverty, misery for their people and unpopularity from a governement standpoint which can result in revolts and possible a coup or worse a civil war.
north korea is even porer than iran?yes they have a lunatic for a leader in kim il jong but same for them what would they gain by getting more economic sanctions?misery as if they dont have enough already for years now.they wholy depend in china for everything from meds too food to any other basic necessities..if they get more sanctions the trading between them and china or the economic aid given by few other countries can be suspended
so my point here is if countries like that say they need too develop plutonium!not nukes ...plutonium is a ingredient in making nukes...if they say they need to enrich plutonium for eletricity (iran) and unspecified peacful purposes(north korea)well lets be inclined t believe them ..of course let not close our eyes and not be cautious they are after all ruled by demented presidents/dictators but lets give them the slightest margin of work ,lets watch them and allow them to continue thier programs otherwise i would seriously like to see a country stand up in the u.n and call out the u.s to get rid of their nukes or face snctions as well .i would live for that day when someone will stand up!
who amongst you will answer the call!let them be let them continue their programs or furnish clear evidence of wrong doing otherwise you too america answer for your nukes as well !very simple folks very simple...
thanks for reading
comments are appreciated as always
good or bad
have a good day

When the US was in the same position as Iran, there were no discussions about nuclear programs or proliferation agreements. There was only science, scientists, and a few government contracts for something big and powerful that would save US troops lives.
There were a lot of nations (e.g. USSR) who were outraged at the thought of using such a weapon. Even more piped up after it was used to end the bloody war that was being waged. It was inhumane, unfair, overkill. We were the super power then all the German scientists fled and came to the US...we were glad to put them to work. There was little consideration for asking the biggest bully/protector on the block to throw away his precision wrist rocket just because all the other kids only had their home mad sling shots.

After the ensuing conflicts and the end of the Cold War era, those with the nukes promised to scale back their arsenals and minimize the nuclear program. You can thank the Reagan administration for that.

So now that those nations who developed nuclear weapons all by themselves to catch up with the superpowers, back before there were any regards as to the total annihilation of the earth, have all gotten together and promised that they would not expand their programs and thus will keep each other in check; it is in all nations interest as you said to prevent rogue nations (those who do not have any interest in international politics nor adhering to UN sanctioned policy) from achieving that technology, and spreading the threat of the nuclear weapon further than it already has gone.

Here is a question for you.
Those in the US you have that view are the same ones who don't want people to have guns yet they think that the president of Iran should have the most 2nd most deadly weapon in the world without question (1st being lawyers sorry I couldn't help myself).

So why can't everyone have any kind of weapon they want in the world?

The NPT theoretically obligates ALL nuclear powers to negotiate an eventual elimination of such. The USA is a signatory.

The only reason it's OK we have nukes and they can't is because we signed the Geniva Convention. Iran, has not signed or has no plans to join it. Am I saying this is OK to do NO but it is why.

that is a really good question, i am sorry that i dont have the answer but i will put this on my watchlist. my assumption however (and i am not assuming its true) is because we are a superpower, we can point fingers but no one is bold enough to point the finger to us
