Phenol has a distinctive smell and I can't really describe it you just know it when you smell it if you have smelt it before.

Phenol is not a nice compound and should not be used wherever possible.

Phenol is used as a disinfectant, and is sometimes added to toilet paper. So a lot of people recognise the smell of phenol as the smell of toilet paper in public toilets. In the UK it's marketed as "Izal".

To answer your question: no, you should not rush yourself to the hospital everytime you come in contact with the chemical. All you can do is take the usual percausions associated with handling toxic chemicals. I would definately avoid chronic exposure to it, though, because the MSDS report really isn't exaggerating on its harmful effects on your respiratory system. Obviously the chloroform bonding to the phenol causes a drastic increase in the volatile nature. Just try to keep it away from your face and skin, and keep it in the fume hood as much as possible.
