I don't mean you personally, just in general.

Actually talking about yourself will just be a turn off if it is all you know. Become knowledgeable of the world in general and you will be successful in conversations because people will want to hear what you know. You yourself will become self confident because you really do know things.
Read old National Geographic magazines. 25 cents at most thrift stores and they are full of interesting articles that you can use in conversations when subjects come up. This is what I did when I was young and became the center of conversations. The guy people wanted around them. I learned over time to become a real story teller.

Good question

No, what makes a conversation successful is to talk about the other person.

To be successful in conversation...you gotta listen to what everyone else is saying. If it adds to the conversation for someone to speak about themselves...by all means do so...but to be a good conversationalist...listen, listen, listen...and then you'll know the right things to say when the opportunity presents itself.

i've found that most people like to talk about themselves more than they like to listen to others, so if you can manage to just nod and ask a question about them now and then, you don't have to say a thing about yourself if you don't want to. sad, but true.

I've never thought so, but I'm not very good at conversation altogether so I really can't be sure.

no, it's way more fun to get someone talking about themselves and hear what they have to say, only hate it when someone turns the tables on me!
