Depends on the individual store. The Home Depots in southern California were bad compared to Lowes, but in the midwest the Home Depots I've gone to are great.

We have three of each in the city I live in, and I have found that it really depends on the store - and even more specificially, the department you are in - and even more specifically, the person you are working with. I've had great service from both and I've had less than perfect from both. I went to Home Depot most recently with a list of five very different items I needed, and an employee found me and walked with me to show me all five items - all over the store - and help me decide on which things I wanted within each category. I've had similar service at Lowe's, but the Home Depot example was more recent.

My personal opinion is that they have similar training programs and similar standards, and that it's the individual employees (including both managerial staff and floor employees) that make the difference. I also like Lowe's colors better than Home Depot if that makes a difference. :)
