I spoke with a very rude woman in Direct TV customer service and she told me that it didn't matter where I got it from and how much I paid; it was theirs. If I terminate my Direct TV contract, I have to send the box back. I understand that I have to pay a service fee to use it with Direct TV and to keep the software updated but how can they claim that the box is theirs if I bought it independently?

You paid for a box to use, in other words you rented it THE service is what you pay for
Just like TIVO, DSL, Cable TV, Phone equipment

Okay i have owned three DirecTV Tivo units ( 2 SD-DVR40, 1 DSR704) for a few years now. I also JUST purchased 3 more DirecTV Tivo Units (same models as above) for a total of 5 DVR in my house. They are networked on my wired/wireless LAN. Now when I purchased the itmes on Ebay this month and connected them I had NO problem getting them connected without any LEASE option. I did have to BUY 3 NEW Access cards from them to install in the Tivo's though. Now DirecTV does not sell the Tivo brand DVR's any longer and the NEW R15's are only by lease, so if you happened to purchase on Ebay a R15 that was being leased then you need to get your money back from the SELLER now because he leased the boxes and did not have the RIGHT to sell them. If you want DirecTV service and Like Tivo then make sure to buy the Philips or Hughes models or any DirecTV Series 2 Tivo units( not the Series 3 they offer now, or an R10 which is like a Series 2.5). Then if you ever want you can own, upgrade, or whatever you want with them.

I have upgraded all five DirecTV Tivo units with DVRupgrades InstantCake 6.2 & PTVnet software, They have 200GB and 250 GB hard drives in them, They also have MRV (MultiRoom Viewing) and HMO (Home Media Option) working. If you ever go this route take a look at DVRupgrade.com for the software and DVRplayground.com for Forums and How To's. Hope this helps a bit.

This is done to try to stop theft of service.. you can buy the boxes on eBay cheap, but it is the access cards people . Those card are worth about 150 dollar a piece. So you buy a box keep the card and sell the box on eBay. Or if you have a card you can buy a box on e bay an get free service. this will take some bootleg boxes off the street
I own 4 boxes these are mine. I had to activate them for at least a year or pay a fine. I think may giving the box back might be a better deal then paying an early termination fee.
The person you got the box from did not explain that he leased the box. Call eBay and get your money back.

Do you know the history of that unit?? You bought it from a person online, that might have kept it on a account that wasn't closed right. Unless you bought it from a store retailer then your claim is null. This would be the same for a regular cable box bought from one state and sold in another online.

The person you bought it from, didn't technically own it. So it wasn't theirs to sell. This is a new thing DirecTV is doing. You don't actually purchase the equipment, you just lease it. More than likely to avoid independent selling.

It sucks, but that's their policy.

If you bought it from another person then yes DirecTV owns it. The other person was leasing it now you're the one that's leasing it. If you bought it from a store then you own it but are still subject to the $5.99/month DVR fee.

i'm not thoroughly particular about direct television, yet i understand some television carriers can do PiP (image in image) and others won't be able to. on one among my networks, it worked till i have been given the DVR field, which then made it so as that i could not PiP. solid success! you would possibly want to favor to the contact direct television for solutions
