I'd like answers besides using Febreeze. I use it often and it doesn't help. The fabric on my couches don't come off either for me to wash them in the washing machine.

You might want to consider hiring someone to professionally clean the couch the first time to get most of the odor removed. Our area it costs between $75 and $100 to clean a standard 8 foot couch. They have a special solution that pulls odor out of material from down inside where you can not reach. Be sure to tell them that is why you are hiring them. To maintain the fresh smell try going to your local janitorial supply store and buy an odor release solution. Follow the directions on the label. Do not use an air freshener, this just temporarily masks the odor, the odor release allows the odor to release its hold on the fabric and to dissipate into the air. You might smell the dog smell stronger right after wards, that is cause it is being pulled out of the couch which is what you want.

Buy a new couch seriously with fabric that does come off. Not only for your dog but what if you spill wine or juice on it. It will help in the future.

Give your dog a bath more often too, and maybe spray him/her with dog perfume after they shower. It's really strong and can be purchased at the your local Animal Care Clinic.

lemon scented sudsy ammonia.
mix with one cup ammonia and four or five cups warm water.
soak a cloth in it, wring it out and wipe the cloth into the seams and the edges. If there is any decorative cording at the edges wipe both sides.
Don't over wet or soak the cushions. Do it in well vented area and as the ammonia evaporates the smell should go.
test in an under side for color and fabric safety.

I sprinkled baking soda on my couch, waited overnight, then vaccuumed in the morning. To keep the dogs off, I use febreeze a lot and they don't like it. Guess they don't want to smell good.

They sell this powder that you sprinkle on the carpet and then vacuum it up and it makes the carpet smell good. Use that on your couch then vacuum the couch.
