Leeds refused to play, despite the referee passing the pitch fit. They were given the benefit of the doubt by the organisers and were awarded 5 points, which included a bonus point plus the points for winning.

Someone has wrong answer. No Leeds Rhinos players are involved in playing for the Leeds Tykes. The teams are seperate and most of us rhinos fans object to tykes playing at Headingley. Rugby union playwers are not fit to grace a rugby league stadium (with the odd exception!). The Tykes also destroy the pitch and the Rhinos have to play on a quagmire at the start of the league season.
The game was cancelled one day and re arranged for the next. The referee said the pitch was playablebut the Tykes said it was dangerous and would not play. They should have been thrown out of the competition yet were given 5 points which was ridiculous. I am not sure if anyoine knows why but that is rugby union no one relaly knows what happens in the game or even off the pitch. Stick to league it is a far superior game.
Dai Young actually played league for the Leeds Rhinos but did not make it there and I think he went to Salford.

It was contraversial because no game was played. Leeds refused to play a rearranged fixture when the referee passed the pitch fit (I seem to remember it was 'unfit' initially due to snow).
The controversy came mainly from Dai Young who's Cardiff team were in the same group as Leeds and Young (rightly in my opinion, rugby's a tough game and not everyone can have a perfect playing surface all year round) complained that it was out of order that Leeds came away with not just the match points but also a bonus points... for refusing to play!

Because Leeds refused to play the rematch as the original game pitch was declared fit to play, but the opposition refused!

because the Leeds Tykes rugby union had Leeds Rhinos Rugby League players on their side, so its no wonder they got the five points!
union needs League more than League needs union!
AND WHO THE HELL GAVE THIS THE HANDS DOWN?
