You're period is late because you didn't ovulate.
At ovulation, the corpus luteum (the ruptured follicle on the ovary where the egg came out) produces progesterone. Progesterone keeps the lining of the uterus thick and fertile so that the egg has a chance to implant if fertilized. If implantation doesn't occur, the corpus luteum dies after 12-16 days (your luteal phase), progesterone levels plummet, and the uterus sheds its lining...in other words, you get your period.
The spotting you experienced was probably estrogen breakthrough bleeding. If there's no ovulation, the uterus continues to build its lining in preparation for an egg that isn't coming. Estrogen breakthrough bleeding occurs when the lining of the uterus so thick and heavy it essentially collapses on itself. This can cause either heavy period-like bleeding or light spotting.
Most women have an annovulatory cycle once in a while, and it's nothing to worry about. Ovulation can be delayed or skipped entirely due to stress, illness, weight loss or gain, etc. It's only a problem if you have cycle after cycle where ovulation doesn't occur. Just continue to monitor your cycle. It's entirely possible that your ovulation was just delayed for some reason (which would be why your OPK never showed a positive) and that you are just having a long cycle. If so, your period will show up, and your cycle will probably go right back to normal. Good luck.

You don't ovulate when you're on your period. I would try a hot/warm bath. If you still don't start, give it a week, and try another preg test. Good luck.

It could be any number of things that have kept you from ovulating. Are you under more stress? Are you over or under weight? Are you anemic? While I don't think you should run to the ER, I do think you should make an appointment to see your Dr.

Most of the time if you don't ovulate you won't have a period. Considering your period is the passing of an unfertilized egg, no ovulation, no egg, no period, simple.

there could be many reasons. Has there been extra stress in your life lately? Or maybe you are a bit older? sorry for asking! Sometimes women over 30 (argh!) do get delayed cycles.
