Because people like being controlled and not able to think for themselves. They only like to be *told* that they are thinking for themselves.
Most people are slaves to clever branding. People are too small-minded. As long as the masses are small-minded, it makes it easier for them to be controlled.

There is no such thing in Canada.
.
Only people who lobby the government to rob from the productive center and give the loot to the unproductive sector.

The economy of any culture depends on favors. If someone wants something from you, you expect something in return of equal value (monetary or non-monetary). There is a limited role for altruism as well, to the extent that you wish to contribute to those who cannot possibly return a favor.
What could be exchanged is goods for goods, goods for services, or goods for a currency exchange which can be used to purchase goods and services (which makes the exchange portable).
That is the basis of a free market system.
Market systems exist even in the most centrally planned cultures. The currency of a central planned market is favors to those who control the planning, or votes to those who appoint the planners (if elections are even allowed)!
The market always wins. In central planned economies, there are underground economies which do not participate in the official currency exchange. There are barter systems set up to exchange goods. These systems do not operate very efficiently, since there are no commonly agreed ways to facilitate exchanges or organization.
Central planners tend to have limited resources to allocate production and distribution, and have little incentive to improve it. The result of this, is that another means of market force takes over; shortage. Shortages cause goods to become higher in value. If producers have no means or incentive to increase production, the currency becomes a waiting list to wait for a product. This is a cost. Bread lines mean that people must take time to buy bread. This takes away from time they could be using for production.
This shortage caused by central planning is one of the reasons we have waiting lines for health care in Canada.
The market always wins.

This passage talks about some who were able to work, but were looking for donations to keep them in their life-style.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
