I just found out I was pregnant yesterday. I called my OBGYN to make an appointment. The same doctor that delivered my last 2 kids. He's never required a pap before during pregnancy. However when she scheduled me, she said she needed me to have a well woman's first. Granted, I'm over due, but I was overdue with my last child as well. Last time he said they wouldn't perform one because pregnancy usually complicates the results. If that's the case, and the results might not be accurate anyway, should I just refuse until after delivery? I've been monogamous with my husband for 5 years. If there were anything wrong, they wouldn't be able to do anything anyway, right, until after the pregnancy? I'm just not feeling very comfortable about the whole thing.

Okay, if you're not going to read my whole question, don't answer. Yes, I've had two other kids, so I'm aware "there will be a whole lot of hands down there" when I deliver. And no, it's not mandatory. If you just blindly do what doctors tell you, i feel sorry for you and your kids. And golly gee, why would I have any concerns about someone scraping my cervix while I'm pregant? Oh maybe a chance of miscarriage. So seriously, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't answer.

with the first daughter and with this one i've had a pap test and there wasn't any pregnancy complications. my doctor performs them on every patient. this is also to make sure that you don't have an std that can harm the baby. it's your body and they won't do anything that you don't wnat them to do but i don't understand why you wouldn't want the pap test.

They dont do any harm to anything. They are always preformed at the first pregnancy appointment and then towards the end to check for Group Strep B. I have had a different doctor for each of my 4 kids and have never not had a pap done in the beginning and end of each pregnancy. Its ok to do.

Why they are gonna check you out every month until the child is born anyway? Just go ahead and get the pap smear but if any results are off then remind them you were pregnant.

You are just nervous...it's ok. My doctor did a pap on me to begin with to make sure that nothing was wrong to start with. the doctor that delivered my daughter did a pap, too, at the beginning of my preg. I wouldn't refuse...it's not going to hurt your pregnancy any at all!!!

Pap smears are required for the 1st checkup. It's no biggie. I know it sucks to have to do it, but you have to do it to make sure that you are well enough to carry baby full term. They check for cancer and stuff like that. Don't you want to make sure everything is o.k. down there? I know paps suck but, wait until you have bub! There's gonna be all kinds of hands down there girlfriend. If you are just embarassed, don't be. These Drs. see this type of thing (no punn intended) all the time. Just let him do it. Don't be difficult and refuse it. I don't think you can anyways.

I had one pap smear done with my first and current pregnancies during my first doctor's appointment. I also had first trimester spotting during both pregnancies, so that was another reason that I had them done.

It's really up to you. They cannot force you to have one if you are not comfortable with it. Talk about it with your doctor.

Yes, it is safe. It is actually mandatory to have, just in case you have an infection or something the Doctor can fix it while your still early or know now whether or not you will definately need a c-section.

I had one done with both of my children and it didn't cause any problems and my results were accurate. I would go ahead and let them do it - it won't hurt anything and it's better to be safe than sorry.
