There are plants that are said to offend squirrels, such as lavender and sage. Plant these in pots or in your plant beds. Even if it doesn't work, you'll end up with the wonderful fragrances to enjoy and will have fresh herbs.
It's also a good idea to provide squirrels with an alternative food source. I have a rope hanging between two trees and hang dried corn cobs from it with a bungie cord. It not only keeps the squirrels out of my pots and flower beds, but it's really fun to watch the acrobatics!
There are also a variety of formulas you can purchase to deter them, such as Critter Ridder shake on granules, which is made of a pepper-based formula, with oil of black pepper, piperine and capsaicin as the active ingredients. Others are made from dried fox urine. These can be purchased online and are said to be very long-lasting.
At the very least, don't resort to "popping them with an air gun," or any other inhumane tool. There's a lot of information about fencing in gardens and trapping squirrels on the Web. I would never give up my squirrels. They are entertaining and they clean up all the walnuts that fall out of my neighbors tree!

I have the squirrels from Hades. Too many to count, and too many to shoot (I'd need a machine gun anyway!).
Cayenne pepper didn't work. I did a mixture of two things: Got one of those life-like owls with the evil eyes (their heads turn with a motion detector - very creepy), and sprinkled USED (but cleaned out) cat litter around the plants. We have 3 indoor cats, so when it was time to replace the litter, we just cleaned out the "unmentionables" and stored the rest of the old litter in a plastic jug with a pour spout. You have to reapply the cat litter after a good soaking rain, but the combo of the two seems to have done the trick.

I have a pretty good garden going and a family of squirrels that live in the area. I just keep them happy with walnuts and peanut butter bread on a different spot of the yard. They never bug the bird feeds or the plants. It's cute because they actually bring their children with them. Greedy little buggers! lol

Ground Red/Cayenne Pepper! Just sprinkle it in there, and they should stay away. Just don't get it in your eyes or breathe it in yourself. Not a pleasant thing. LMAO @ the answer from the person saying they thought your question said, "How do you keep squirrels out of your pants"...that's hilarious. Thank you, I needed a good laugh today!

The feed them mentioned above works, we have to appease the gods, Ha!
I bought a Havaheart Squirrel trap. Though it say it for squirrels it may be too small for the ones we have (Model 1030). Today it had been Tripped, but, nothing inside.
Most local Hardware stores have them. They not cheap.

squirrels are beautiful and clever but a bit of a nuisance no unpleasant smelly plants will bother them. The best solution is a dog of any breed, get your cam cord out and enjoy

cant believe anyone would suggest a shotgun - how awful. i buy peanuts for the squirrels in our garden and they love them...they dont bother destroying our plants now... perfect! the peanuts also attract a nice array of wild birds - which is a bonus

I had the same problem, along with rabbits eating our plants. We tried sprinkling pepper, human hair, commercial animal repel products and all sorts of other stuff and nothing ever seemed to work. However we noticed that they only bothered certain species of plants..so we stopped planting their favorites!

Crushed red chili pepper is a safe and humane way to keep them away. I use it in my bird feeder, the birds love it and the squirrels hate it.
