To me partner is a word that means that the relationship is more than the girlfriend stage. Would I say that someone who has been together for 15 years has a girlfriend? That does not express the full meaning of thier relationship. Same sex couples are not the only ones who search for a word to define their relationship. More and more people are chosing not to get married but to live together in a committed relationship. Partnership is better than most words.

I don't really like using partner but boyfriend or girlfriend sounds like you just traded class rings after the Jr Prom.
We need a better word.

I actually don't like the word girlfriend. It makes me feel like I'm still in high school. I also have a few female, straight friends who use girlfriend among themselves to designate a platonic friendship, and I prefer not to mislead people.

I think that it depends on who you are around. I dont think that it should matter. Some say girl friend but I think partner might be a little more....

Nope, I have no problem with it. She IS my partner, my life partner, my other half....she makes our family whole.
