Basically an internal citation is when you reference your source within your paper.

So you might be talking about education and you want to use a book that you found on your topic so you would say:
Author (year) states "then you enter your quote here."
You can also state the fact or quote first and put the (Authors name and year in brackets at the end).
If you use a quote that is word for word and is longer than 3 lines that you need to single space the quote and have it indented on both sides by two tabs to seperate it from the rest of the paragraph and cite it with the authors name in brackets at the end and the year then double space and continue your paragraph with no indentations.

This is just another way of recording your sources right there so that the readers don't have to scramble and look for footnotes and they know who stated the fact and when. This also allows judgements to be made by the reader as some sources may be really outdated or really recent which would add to your paper.

Then at the end of your paper you have a reference page where you list the complete source with the Authors name, year, book, etc.
