Mediation is also a possibility, and a mediator cost much much less than an attorney. I'm sure you can obtain without charge if your income is extremely low. Call the mediation service in your area to find one if you are interested..

If there isn't already a lot of hostility, a mediator often can help you come to a reasonable divorce settlement. Not only do you save lawyer fees, but court battles can increase anger and bitterness just by their adversarial nature.

And never forget, some good counseling can often save a marriage that seems hopeless. Divorce has to be harder than one can imagine, and I have talked to so many people 10 years down the road - - who have found a different relationship/marriage is not any better.

Good Luck which ever way you choose.

Actually not really but there are ways to get around the high cost of a divorce proceeding. On the other hand there are programs for people who are in a certain tax bracket, (mostly low income) who obtain legal assistance due to their income.

There is no obligation on your part to hire the lawyer who contacts you. However, if you decide to hire the lawyer, the amount of fees that lawyer charges will vary depending on the case.

In some cases a lawyer will work on a contingency basis, meaning you will not pay anything unless you win your case.
( this may be your best bet)

Other lawyers may charge on an hourly or flat fee basis. You and the lawyer should discuss the fee structure in your initial meeting.

good luck and I hope this helps

a lawyer offering free services! Ha Ha Ha.....I seriously doubt you will find one that will offer their services for free. My advice is the next time you plan on getting married realize that the divorce rate is over 50%. Your about to have a long and expensive battle ahead of you. Good Luck.

Your local court clerk can help point you in the right direction. Most public libraries and book stores have all the legal forms. If the divorce in uncontested, simply fill out all the papers, file them with the clerk, and pay the filing fee (from $50-$250 depending on the state). The rest is up to the judge.

Yeah, tons. You'll have to check your local Attorney Referal Agencies and Services to see which lawyers offer Pro-bono or at least sliding scale fees for low-income clients. I'd suggest the local chapter of your state's bar association as a starting point.
