PLEASE READ MY ANSWER IN ENTIRETY AND LOOK UP WORDS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THEM TO GET A GRASP OF THE CONTEXT BEFORE YOU LOOK FOOLISH STATING SOMETHING I DISPROVED.

Most of you are very uneducated people who rely on stereotypes and south park for your knowledge. To conform is to do something based on someone elses beliefs and not your own. So if being "normal" is something you disprove yet you do it for acceptance or fear of not getting acceptance you are conforming.

They wear all black because it is a monochromatic scheme that says do not judge me based on clothing. Also because most of them are depressed but, question the meaning of life often following philosophy's such as existentialism to question why we exist.

It may seem a boring bizarre culture if you are ignorant to the culture. It was also breed out of punk which was very political at the time and so non-conformity is a big aspect or was to old school goths. Today goths who go to hot topic defeat the culture of what it was. Individuality cannot be bought with spike collars and silly pants.

To say they are fascinated with negativity is a thoughtless generalization. To want to know how things tick, why do we feel what we feel, and what is there in this world for us is instinctual human concepts not morbid or negative. To strive to only be what you agree with based on your terms and not someone elses is a positive quality if you ask me.

They wear all black because they believe in that system not because they are conforming because that would mean they do it out of someone elses belief and not theirs. For fear of being different. Really you should be proud of being different.

To bring new knowledge, culture, ideals is always strange different, and bizarre and made of mockery by the majority. Until people notice the anatomy and patterns they only see the here and now.

People for decades have not only judged people based on appearance and biased views toward cultures they only understand or are familiar with. They have also killed, raped, had greed violence and all sorts of unethical behavior. Should we approve and simply not fight it? Even though it will always be present.

Marilyn Manson is technically industrial music more so than goth. It incorporates samples of machinery and other such symbolism of the working class by communism of old school industrial music in the 80's. And more popularized by Nine Inch Nails preceding Marilyn Manson.

Goth music is more like Bauhaus dark poetry and socialistic wanderings, or Joy Division with very dancey beats and distorted punk guitars, also having dark poetry about sociology, and meaning purpose of existence. Both bands coming from the 80's and very good especially in todays musical slump.

People don't use stereotypes and generalities to describe a culture you know nothing of it makes you sound foolish.

P.S. The person below me doesn't know what conformity means.

To conform is to fit someones elses belief for purpose of acceptance. Now shouldn't we all be accepted for who we are rather than always seek evaluation from others. It is one thing to change because you deem it necessary to for the better but, based on someone elses principles alone is wrong.

It's a belief system not a style. If we all dressed the same but, we did it based on the fact we enjoy it for our individual purpose and not acceptance fear of acceptance than it'd be ok. The clothes are symbolic to the ideal. You might as well call the cross a fashion statment.

To me a loser is someone who cannot read and gives halfwit answers. Perhaps you are the one who dresses like a monkey to imitate the ignorance around and suffices with your own inbreed knowledge rather than reading what I wrote.

People see the goth style as weird for several reasons.

First, the appearance. Complain all you wish, but human beings have been judging based on appearance for millenia. At a time when language was very primitive, you had to judge by appearance. If you did not, you probably didn't last long. Thus it is ingrained in humans to make snap decisions based on what we see.

Goth people consistently dress in black or primarily in black (I realize in simplifying) and wear clothes are that are very distinct from modern clothing. The great irony is that in trying to appear visually different, goth people tend to befriend only other goths.

Apart from appearance, there is a confusion about what motivates "goth" people: why are such people so attracted or fascinated with darkness, depression, negativity, etc. when most of the world tries to avoid such things?

Of course, you don't see other goths as weird because you're goth too.

I agree with Obscure.

Goth is more a lifestyle or outlook on life than anything. They tend to accept that there are bad things as well as good things in life, rather than 'sweep them under the rug', to say, and pretend they don't exist. They can dress however they want, although many prefer darker colors and more dramatic clothes and makeup, and listen to lots of songs and varied genres of music, which can include but are by no means limited to, new wave, darkwave, ethereal, Celtic, goth rock, punk, postpunk, chants, heavy metal, industrial, Latin, et cetera. Not all are interested in vampires - in fact, relatively few are. Many if not most have good relationships with their parents. Very few have mental or psychological problems. Most are actually quite nice, if a bit saturnine. Very, very, very few are 'satanists' or 'devil worsippers'. Most of the young teenagers who listen to Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, My Chemical Romance, Drowning Pool, et cetera and wear heavy thick makeup and studded spike collars and bracelets are called 'Mall goths', shop mostly at Hot Topic, and - this is important - they're not real goths. They just seem to think they are. They act disturbed and surly and try to impress/intimidate people. It seldom works, as most are obviously pathetic, and almost all will (thankfully) grow out of it. People are quick to judge others. I have been goth for coming on 8 years. And just because we don't suppress our desire for what we like to wear people call that weird. However I think it is more weird that people do not dress how they want, they conform the best they can to modern society. So many times I've been told... "I would dress that way if I had the guts." Let people be quick to tell you that you are weird because only you know if you are truly being yourself and that is all that matters.

I always thought Goth people were trying to be "weird" or at least not look like everybody else. What's up with all the black if you're not trying to stand out, purple is a pretty color.

People who think that goths are 'weird' are actually just reacting to them being different.
If you haven't been exposed to that sort of culture, the music, the style and so on, it could be hard to empathise with that person.
Personally, I try to see past the stereotypes. After all, it's what a person is like that matters, not what they look like.

You asked.

If that's not enough answer for you, then nothing I am going to write from here forward will help you with your problem.

But what the heck - why not try ?

You are goth to demonstrate that you do not conform.

To be "weird" in your context is to be apart from the norm.

To be apart from the norm is to not conform.

It follows directly that to be goth is to be weird is to not conform.
You ask: Why do people think goth is weird?

There's your answer.

People might think goths are wierd because they are a bit scared of them, you probably aren't scared of other goths so don't think they're weird

It just seems like goths go out of their way to be different. They put in that extra effort to be weird because they enjoy being labeled as that. They are rebelling against normalcy. I thought that is what the whole culture it about?

I think that some goth is very sexy and some I don't care for it is just a personal preference thing.
