My 96 Olds is giving me soooo much trouble. I went to a auto repair to find the problem and he told me that the light switch is out, which is why my interior lights, head/backlights, horn, and pwr seats don't work. But when apply pressure to my brakes, the abs light stays on and then all the pwr wants to work. Even the ding in my car will cut on , but when I take my foot off the brake, everything goes back. Could the brake be the main source of my problem or is it just a result of the light switch that's causing the glitches. By the way no fuses blown, car runs fine, and the auto repair guy said it's not the relay. Any advice? Thanks

I doubt if it is the switch. It sounds like when you energize the power to the brake lights by stepping on the pedal you restore the power to the rest of the system. Did your mechanic do any testing or is he making an educated guess that the switch is the problem. I would look at two things before replacing the switch. First, has any work been done on the car where a wiring harness could be disconnected or plugged in wrong. Like a stereo installation, alarm, etc. Secondly does the braking system work correctly. You say the ABS light comes on. You could have a computer problem. Your mechanic may not be qualified to do the type of testing required to repair this car. You may have to go to the dreaded GM Dealer to get it fixed right.

It sounds like you've installed a stereo or something that is hooked up to the wrong power source with the ground wire acting as a Hot wire when apllying the Brakes. Contact me at shastadiabetes.com and I'll work through the problem with you so you know what to tell the Mechanic the next time you go.

It's not an Olds, but my Merc was doing kind of the same thing recently. It turned out to be a switch on the transmission. Yeah, sounds weird, but that's what it was. You are going to have to take it to an electrical shop that can do the diagnosis. If you are lucky, they may have seen another Olds with this problem. Ask your mechanic if he can recommend a shop that specializes in electrical work.

Good luck.

I don't know for sure, but I would think it has a bad ground somewhere. When you press the brake pedal the ground is making up through the brake light switch.

Take your Oldsmobile to a General Motors shop. Preferably Chevrolet or Pontiac. They have diagnostic devices that will pin point your electrical problem quickly. Please understand that many independent auto repair shops do not have the specific equipment to diagnose these problems accurately. Go for it Zencarma.

call the dealer and ask for an outstanding recall on your car. All you have to give them is the last 8 digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN) which should be in the front window on the driver's side.
