I think that is quite often the case. However, I think there are times when people insult others not to feel better about themselves, but to simply feel better.Sometimes lashing out does not have a deep meaning to it other than immediate relief. Like yelling at all those idiots when I'm driving. It's not because of my faults, it is because it makes me feel better.

Definitely, why else would someone even be thinking of what someone else is doing if they were not in some way comparing them to themselves. Most of a person's life is based upon comparison, either to improve upon themselves or to pretty much say," Could be worse, I could be that guy." People with higher self-esteem tend to compare to improve while those will little to no self-esteem do it to feel better. Personally, my self esteem sucks so in some instances I compare to feel better but mostly only when I watch those reality shows on TV (Supernanny and Nanny 911). In the end, though, I even have to give those people credit. It takes a considerable amount of guts to go national with your issues.
I just read through a few where people said that people criticize to bring others down to their level and it reminded me of an awesome saying:
"Misery Loves Company"

Yes, whether it's true or not. An insult really is unnecessary. Why would anyone really want to make someone feel that bad. Unless they have it coming. If your insulting a person who has continuously made others feel crappy...then go for it!!!

Neat question! I suspect you're right about using insults to elevate self-esteem, for the most part. Beyond that, however, I think insulting others can be considered a variation of exercising wit -- especially when it comes to "flame wars," or online disagreements.

I agree with you. I have seen so many people put others down and be down right embarrassing. Thinking it would make others take notice to the victim, and over look their faults. I've seen it at work, with acquaintances, and in my own family even. What these people don't have enough sense to realize.... they draw more attention to themselves giving the impression of being self centered, arrogant, down right rude and insensitive.

absolutely. Most of the time people insult others in order to reassure themselves or their peer group that they are better than that person socially or intellectually. Often this is so much hot air as insults often cover up other emotions such as pity, anger, jealousy, or just plain old envy.
Remember that most hate and anger comes from an inflated ego "how can they do this to ME" and when you stop and see it from another perspective, you might find out that YOU are the jerk.

Personally I insult others because I'm mean like that. I know my faults and I am at peace with them.

I am sure some people do. But, I insult people mostly because I get really frustrated with peoples stupidity. I am pretty outspoken and have a short temper, so I insult people a quite a bit. It's a wonder I haven't gotten shot yet....

Definently! Some people are feeling bad and they just seem to want to bring everyone down with them. However, some people do seem to be just mean! but then again you never know what someone is feeling inside!
