Can you give me specific directions for rooting a small piece of my douglas or frasier fir Christmas tree? I put it in water as soon as it was cut off of our tree to fit in our house.

Cuttings from Douglas fir can be successfully rooted but it is not easy. Take cuttings of 5 to 8 inches from the newest growth. Strip all the growth from the cuttings but the top most newest growth. Dip the end of the stem in a rooting hormone, this is more important for tree cuttings than flower cuttings, so don't skip this step. Place the stem in a pot of 1/2 sand and 1/2 potting soil about 1 gallon size. After watering, cover the pot and plant with a clear plastic bag. Use some sticks longer than your cuttings to keep the plastic from touching them. Put your pots in a warm place out of direct sunlight. Rooting should take from 6 to 8 weeks.
If your cuttings does not root don't get discouraged, starting with a tree which had probably been cut weeks before you got your cutting doesn't help. Try again with fresh cuttings and use several cuttings not just one to increase your chances of success. Hope your cutting takes off and becomes a nice tree for you.

Unfortunately, if your fir tree has been cut, you cannot root a limb. There is a way to root and grow a new tree from a limb of a fir tree that is still in the ground; it's called layering. But that is not an option for a cut tree.

While some trees can be rooted from new growth cuttings (in the springtime) evergreen trees are not going to root with this method. The best way to "get a tree" from your Christmas tree is to look and see if there are any cones on it and plant the seeds contained inside.
