Yes, the original movie had this ... wow, that is a Long, Long time ago (and yes, I did get the original Doctor Doolittle Movie on DVD).

Indeed he did.
In effect, it's similar to a llama with a head at each end, so it's sort of symmetrical. Thus one end pushes as the other pulls. Hence the name.
