A long time ago the Advanced Graphics Port (AGP)
replaced the Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) as the standard way to connect the graphics card to the motherboard.

PCI-Express is a new and faster form of PCI, which is replacing AGP as the standard for graphics card slots.

PCI-Express offers roughly twice the data transfer rate of 8x AGP.

You can't put a PCI-Express card in an AGP slot or vice versa, so your motherboard will have to have PCI-Express if you want to use a PCIE card.

PCI-Express is the way to go for real gaming.

The PCI Express interface has double the bandwidth of the AGP interface. This means it's much faster for moving information through it. AGP moves at about 2.16GB per second through its interface, and PCI-Express moves about 4GB per seconds through it's interface.

This means that more detailed graphics are displayed when using powerful PCI-Express cards.

The main difference right now between AGP and PCI-E cards, other than the interface, is that pretty much all graphics cards generate information through a PCI-E architecture. Modern AGP cards now must be equipped with a PCI-E to AGP chip, which is an extra cost beyond manufacturing a regular PCI-E card. This is why an AGP card can cost more than a PCI-E card.

The progression of discrete pics interface technologies is going some thing like this PCI -> AGP 2x/4x -> AGP 4x/8x -> PCI teach x16 -> PCI teach 2.0 each has more effective useful bandwidth and substances more effective electric powered ability than the basically accurate. in case your laptop is in consumer-friendly words a three hundred and sixty 5 days previous, opportunities are extreme it has PCI teach x16, do not project about PCI teach 2.0, both the playing cards and the slots are backwards nicely proper to PCI teach x16. examine to work out what your motherboard helps. there is an chance that it continues to be AGP. They nonetheless make some competant pics playing cards for the AGP slot. basically purchase what's supported, both way you may be doing more effective useful than onboard video.

To put it basically, AGP = Old. PCI-E = New

PCI-E is the newest type of graphics card available, making computers that come with AGP / AGP motherboards are becoming less rare!

The potential on a PCI-E slot offers higher performance :

AGP x8 = 2.1 GB/sec half duplex (4 Bytes @ 533 MHz)
PCI-E x16 = 4 GB/sec full duplex (2 Bytes @ 2 GHz)

But it depends on the card ... some AGP cards are faster than some PCI-E cards.
