I highly recommend getting a standard hagh-school American history textbook first... it doesn't matter too much which one. They are all more or less the same.

You will probably find this to be bland and largely uninteresting, if you just read it as the surface level. It will also be chock full of inaccuracies. But I think it is a good resource for one reason - this is what Americans like to think about themselves.

Then go out and get a copy of "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen (link below). This book specifically addresses many of the biggest inaccuracies of high school textbooks, and discusses what most historians to be much more accurate accounts of events. This will tell you what actually went on.

And they are both very interesting things to know - both what Americans LIKE to think happened and what REALLY DID. Most of all, remember that history is about people, not names and dates. Try to imagine it and it becomes much more interesting! Enjoy!

None of them are really all that great, and most of them give intentionally flawed versions of certain events. I would suggest getting a variety of books, in order to get a full picture, if it's feasible for you.

My advice would be to find one that doesn't hide or ignore the fact that America was built on the killing of indians, slavery, civil rights violence and empiricism.
