is there a mechanism in place to have somebody stripped of their title , if found out to have acted illegally or at best highly immorally in his business dealings?

A knighthood (sir) or other lower honour (eg OBE) can be removed by royal decree.
To remove a peerage (lord) takes an act of parliament.

There is apparently a committee dealing with these things. There was talk of stripping Mugabe of his honorary knighthood in 2003 of which I have not heard any more and there are moves underfoot to strip the Farepak boss of his following a situation of the kind you described. I suppose that if a decision is made to do this, the person concerned receives a letter ordering him to stop using his title and to return the physical accoutrements of his knighthood forthwith. http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1681472006

They stripped Prince Naz (the boxer) of his M.B.E so i'm sure knighthoods can be taken away.
