Just plugging it in to my computer here at work AT MY SHOP I came up with $309 + tax to install a remanufactured starter @ $97/hr - not including any diagnostic time. A new one could easily bring the total to $375 though you didn't specify which you got. I don't know how labor rates in NJ compare to here either but from what I can tell with the available information you probably did fine.

PS

Anyone who thinks they can get a decent starter for this car for $75 is smoking crack. The cheapest WHOLESALE price I could find for a cheap brand that I wouldn't recommend using was higher than that!

The best way to tell is price the starter yourself from where ever they got the part. The starter for my car is almost $200, however if you return the old starter when you buy the new one (trade in the core) the price will drop to $130. Many mechanics get the new starter for the higher price and charge you for it. Then afterwards, take the old one back and get credited for the core charge.

I think you got taken. A starter costs $75.00 on the average. The labor takes about an hour. With the Starter replaced and starter combined it should have run you $135.00 at the most. Did who ever replace the starter have to Diagnose the problem and how long did it take to decide it wouldn't start, and why. This might have driven the cost up, but only a few bucks not $200.00. Tell the Mechanic who laid it on you to e-mail me and will discuss what an overcharge is and what to do about it! shastadiabetes@yahoo.com When you get a repair done on your vehicle don't be afraid to get a second opinon. It will save you money in the long run.

Sounds pretty steep to me.

The starter motor for that car runs between $119-$150

At most 1 hour of labor to install a starter.

Was anything else replaced? Battery? Or just the starter?

That is probably about right if the work was done at the dealership and OEM parts were used.
