I have had breakthrough bleeding on the pill for a few days, and the doctor said it was possibly caused by stress and should go away on it's own.
She said to keep taking the pills, but if I keep taking them everyday, will that somehow prolong the bleeding or prevent it from stopping?

If it makes a difference, I'm supposed to be on the pills without monthly breaks. The other way didn't work for me.

The pills should make your periods lighter. Bcp actually keep you from having a "cycle", they replace your natural cycle with an artificial one. So if the pills' cycle is interrupted for some reason, you will have breakthrough bleeding. In your case, the hormone changes brought about by stress could be interrupting the pills' cycle. If you stop taking the pills, you will interrupt their cycle as well. Once the cycle is interrupted, your body will have a period and try to start a new cycle. Continuing to take the pills is the only way to keep your body on the pills' cycle. If you stop now, the bleeding will likely get heavier. Keep taking them.

While taking your OCs continusouly can yield many benefits (which is probably why your doc/NP wants you to take them that way), the main complaint women have is the annoying breakthrough bleeding. If you read the fine print in the patient information leaflets for the extended cycle birth control pills (such as Seasonale), you'll see that breakthrough bleeding is a really common problem that is annoying, but rarely anything dangerous. And, like the woman said earlier, it is so important to continue taking your pills exactly as directed by your doctor/NP. Missing them or not taking them at exactly the same time every day can cause or make breakthrough bleeding worse.

No. It will not cause you to bleed until you stop taking the pill.
Right now continue on the pill and keep with the breakthrough bleeding--record the days you bled and how heavy it was. Was it light enough for a panty liner or did you need a super pad/tampon?
Also, learn some destressing techniques. Continue on the pill for a 2-3 months before getting worried. You won't bleed the entire time; you'll ease up soon.

Continue taking your pills every day. The breakthrough bleeding will eventually stop.
Do as the doctor said.

I was just at the doc for this, she wants to put me on the continuous pills with no break for a period, there actually are high chances of breakthough bleeding with these type of pills, but the doc told me that after a few months you should find a somewhat 'regular' schedule when you spot.
