The conventional wisdom is later this month, but likely after the January 23 SOTU. The first debate has been sceduled for April 26 in SC. So, he will very likely announce before that. That's a 3 month window. A candidate can announce after the first debate, but that might be a real disadvantage.

My guess early February

From what I have read, Obama plans to announce in late January, but could move up his announcement if Hillary Clinton starts to make some noise about running.

The smart move would be not to run for President and keep making speeches on behalf of the Democratic party.

This way he could position himself as a potential VP candidate. It would be a win/win situation for him. If the Democrats win, he's the VP, if they lose, he has positioned himself as the lead candidate in 2012.

He may surprise us and decide not to run. Keep himself available for the VP spot.
