I own the HP C5180 Photosmart printer. It scans, copies, prints, and does photos beautifully. If you don't need to scan or copy, take a look into the HP Photosmart D7160 or D7360. All these printers are listed on HP.com and there you can find more information about them.

HP has a bunch of Photosmart printers that do a great job with pictures if you use the right papers. General purpose paper for most things then switch to higher quality paper for pics. You can even change to a more brilliant ink for photos. Actually most printers these days do a good job and in stores like Office Max, Office Depot or Compusa you can sometimes make test prints to see for yourself.

Depends on the use. HP is generally tops for quality, but Canon make a better photo printer. For daily low-cost printing, Lexmark is best, but Dell is a decent also-ran.
The Canon photo printer that I just bought prints in the highest resolution currently possible and prints with 5 cartridges. They also make one that prints with 6 and is more of a dedicated photo printer, but they were sold out when I purchased. Print quality was similar to the naked eye and both were professional quality (similar to what you would get from a one hour photomat).
Both also print full size 81/2 x 11 prints for standard printing, and can also do double sided printing. All for under $150.
