I hate knitting, it is so lame and girly, but I have noticed how my gerbil holds an almond and it has given me a good idea. I was just wondering if this was possible, and if so, HOW.

My goodness - so many miserable people out there. Come on - lighten up!

My advice is to give them little pins and some dental floss and place a cat picture nearby. If this doesn't work, threaten them with the almighty cat-god.. in a nice way, of course. Also - feed them puree of mango. It is said to relieve stress, improve state of mind and general wellbeing! (and that's just for humans)

I think maybe some electro therapy may be needed for this one as it sounds a bit tricky. You could wire up the knitting needles to a 9v battery and superglue them to the hamsters hands. You may have to help the critter to cast-on though first as this is a bit tricky. Then show him a couple of times how to knit and row, if he doesn't get it right after that, zap him with the 9 volts until he gets the idea. it should work fine, I've taught my rabbit to service my nether regions with a 9v ;-)

You need a lot of patience to do this. Firstly obtain some very small needles. You can probably find these on eBay-Search-'Gerbil Needles' Stick these in his nuts every time he feeds.
He will pull them out quickly ! Next time you do this, put in some wool . After some months he will begin to knit, (probably out of fear) but no matter he has saved you a hated chore.

see if you can get hold of a knitting dvd and slip it on whilst you two are enjoying an evening together and see how he takes to it.. or enroll him in a knitting club, that way he can make friends whilst having fun. good luck
