Each system has to have a distinct IP
wether or not tose are public IPs is what I'm understanding the question to really be.

It depends on your configuration with you're provider. Some provider's will configure the cable modem to send out public IPs to the systems, others will use private networking from the modem to the attached PCs

you can go to a dos prompt (click start: run: type 'cmd' click ok)
and at the dos prompt type ipconfig to see what IP your computer has.

If it starts with a 192. it's definately private.

The IP adresses assignment is 2 fold.

1. The modem has been assigned its IP address by the ISP (your cable provider).

2. Your desktop and laptop have 2 different IP addresses.

Item 1 and 2 are not similar. All IP addresses are different from your angle.

For an external computer or ISP, they can view your IPaddress as only one address, the one of the modem.

Both. If you want both on the net at the same time, you will need a router. Each computer will have an INTERNAL IP address it uses to talk to the router , and the router will have an IP it uses to talk to the rest of the world.

Without a Router, each computer can be on the net, but not at the same time. Then the IP Address is static for both, most likely set at the ISP server level.

Each computer has its distinct IP... not sure from what...

But if you are on a network... the first few digits of the IP are the same for every computer on the network... with only a variation in the last digits.

When forums ban the IP of someone on a Network... they usually ban the whole network.

A wireless router means that you can use radio to transmit a signal rather than a cable so a basic wired system looks like this Internet>>>Modem>>Router WAN Port Router LAN Port >>Computer #1 Where >> are Ethernet patch cords To change this system to a wireless system, you need 2 things a wireless router and a wireless adapter card for the PC Now the system will look like this Internet>>>Modem>>Router WAN Port Router Wireless >>>> Computer #1 Wireless adapter card Where >> are Ethernet Patch Cords and >>>> is the radio signal between the router and the wireless adapter FYI - make sure to secure the wireless - otherwise your neighbor will be enjoying your Internet connection for free.
