so i plug it in an the mp3 screen says its ready but it doesn’t come up on the 'my computer' bit as new hardware, when i go to add new hardware it cant find any so i must have all ready installed it but if so were is it?

I don't know what mp3 player you have. But in the older ones, you have to install a program provided by the mp3 player on the computer to recognize your mp3 player.
Only some of the new ones support direct plug and play.

In window explorer, open My computer, usually, it will appear as a new drive, such as drive D, E or..? If not, try reinstalling the driver especially if you use window 98.
