How much may freedom be abridged in order to defend freedom?

Most people will quote that Ben Franklin phrase.

"He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither."

The problem with quoting famous dead people, is that you can't call upon them to accurately explain their position. They are also referencing a time that might be totally different than now.
