You know, thats very very good. The HYPE over the PS3 is just that, HYPE. I'm glad to see someone who is being original. Heres a few GOOD suggestions for you.....
Get 1 Sony PS2 memory card and 1 Sony controller.
If you do look around, Costco, Sam's Club, and sometimes Target, Best Buy, etc... you can get one that comes bundled with an extra controller, or a memory card and a couple of games.
When it comes to games, I would buy used games, not the ones you would give her for her B-day, but the ones you would just pick up for the heck of it. Used games can go for as low as 4$, and as high as 25$, just be sure to make sure the disk is in good condition before you buy. But a new game goes for around 40$ to 50$. You can get used games at Best Buy, EB Games, Game Stop, etc...
And if you plan on her playing DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), you'll wanna get a dance pad or 2 (About 20$ ea). Its a good way to workout too playing that game. lol....
Best of luck to you....

An 8 MB Memory Card is needed to save games. There's an official one made by Sony, and some made by third-party manufacturers. Just make sure it works with a Sony Playstation 2, and that it's 8 MB.
An extra controller is a common accessory, too. It's not as necessary as the memory card, though. If your daughter wants to play games in 2-player mode against other people, she'll need one. I would buy an official one, or at least one that looks just as qualified.
Those are the main two. The only other one that you might want is a Network Adapter, which connects the console to the internet, so you can play online multiplayer and stuff.

The only thing you need is a game, controller, and memory card. All of these things can usually be bought where the system is going to be bought. You'd have to ask the retailer or check the box but I believe a controller will come inside the case for the system as well. Memory cards are usually sold seperatly. They are 8mb memory cards standard. And lastly you need a game so your daughter has something to buy. Again, depending on the retailer the PS2 might come with a game attatched. So you need the system, game, memory card, controller. Hope this helps.

Unless it comes in a special bundle, buy an extra controller so you can play 2-player games. Having a HUGE memory card is not a requirement unless you plan on having a TON of games or rent a lot of games and want to keep your progress on them. Other than that, I don't think the other gizmo's are worth the money. I did get the Guitar Hero game w/the guitar controller and that was cool, but I didn't buy it, it was a present.
My friend has a wireless controller, but it's a pain because you have to constantly charge or replace the batteries every few days if you use it a lot.
Just my two cents, guess I'm kind of a miser.

You would need to get a PS2 8mb Memory Card it should say about Magic Gate on it as well. As to controller if you get one you should get either Mad Catz or Pelican. Don't waste the money paying for the Sony brand name, either of those are good third-party developers. Actually with the games still out for the PS2 it really isn't a bad choice. As to the one saying about the DVD remote you don't need it for the PS2. It is only the Xbox that requires it. The PS2 works great using the controller as the remote thing, that is how I did it all the time.

=) aw. good mom! That's so sweet of you to get her a ps2.
Accessories? It depends on the games! The Ps2 comes with a controller,so unless she really likes 2 player games, you won't have to worry about another one of those. A memory card (Ps2,sometimes you can find them in multiple colors) is a must. Be careful, though. There are PS1 and PS2 memory cards. Ps1 cards will only save PS1 games. Ps2 cards will only save Ps2 games, though the system -plays- both, the games themselves have different methods of saving.
Does she like to sing and dance? If so,Dance Dance Revolution is still fairly hot with most kids 12 and up. This requires a 'dance pad',and most any will do. Some of the newer games (Dance Dance Revolution Supernova, for instance) come with dance mats (their controller) already in a package for around $50. You actually save $10 that way-The pads included usually cost around $20,and the game itself is usually $40 when it comes out.
Does she like to sing? Karaoke Revolution and -tons- of other singing games are available. These require the typical analog controller (what you receive in the box) and a microphone or a headset (typically found online or in stores like Bestbuy for around $20).
If she likes drums, there's a game called Taiko Drum Master that comes in a lovely box set for anywhere between $20 and $40 (dependant upon current pricing-it's tending to bounce back and forth, a lot lately).
There's also Guitar Master, there's beatmania... a lot of different games require different controllers. =) The ones above are just some examples.
HOWEVER.
Simply by closely reading the back of the box of the game you are buying will tell you -exactly- everything you need for it. From how much memory it takes up to the amount of players, the equipment needed and the rating... and lots more!
In any case. ^^ good luck!

It comes with one controller, Pick a second one up. When buying a memory card stick to sony brand. The others cause clitches and game freezes. Playstation 2 games need ps2 memory cards, and if you purchase ps (1) games for the ps2 you still need a ps (1) memory card. Games that are fun for her age are crash bandicote, Spyro (year of the dragon), Sonic the hedgehog, Dance revolution. Dvd movies can be controlled and watched with use of game controllers so don't waste time with remote for DVD's.

The only accessories you need to get are memory cards and maybe an extra controller for a friend to play. And of course some games to play. You may want to think about getting a gift certificate for that, unless you know what games she wants.
Games can range from $20 to $50 depending on how new the game.
Memory Cards usually run about $20
Controllers usually run about $30
Hope that helps.
