Your car should not lose power if the fan belt is slipping..! It could be one of the alternator bearings is knackered causing it not to charge the battery whilst your driving. Hence the lack of power. Start your car, put the headlites on full beam. Check how strong they are and then turn off the car-not the lites. If they stay the same, probably dull then its the alternator.

It could be the fan belt. I'd tighten it first, then replace later. I'd do that first. Another possibility is the water pump bearings. To fix, change the antifreeze. If neither work, listen very carefully with the hood up, to try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Worst case: need a new water pump. But not hard to do, if you good. ONLY use belt dressing to see if this fixes the problem. Belt dressing will NOT solve this problem, although it might give you an indication that the belt is the problem, if it momentarily stops the belt from slipping. If it DOES stop the belt from slipping, then either tighten the belt first; then if necessary (if the tightenin don't work) then change to a NEW belt.

Squealing would suggest slipping fan belt.
If it had slipped a notch on cam belt it would be making worse noises than that.

My guess for the lack of power is some sensor in the car indicates to engine management there is a fault and cuts the revs back to save excess damage.

If it just needs a fan belt even at a garage I would of thought no more than £40-£50.

The fan belt won’t affect the driving performance of the car, as you describe. It could very well be the cam belt though! Don't start the car until you've had it looked at. The damage caused by a broken/slipping cam belt can be horrific so fingers crossed.

Most likely a belt slipping. Cost will depend on vehicle year, make, model. If the belt is fairly new then it may just need to be tightened, the procedure for that is different for every vehicle otherwise I would describe it. You can go to NAPA and get a Krikit (think thats how they spell it) belt tension gauge for like 12 bucks that will last a life time, might be a worthy investment

Sound more like clutch slip to me , as a test put car in top gear and try to pull away with engine revs about 300. if the engine is still running and the car is squealing your clutch has gone if it stalls then it is not the clutch

if it squeaked when you reved the engine then its the water pump. i doubt its a fan belt. i would think a new pump and fitting would cost around £50-£100
