If an album is released with a good design on the front cover. do you think that would help it to sell more than an album with a less interesting cover. I'm not interested in the music part. i just want to see if you think that art helps to promote albums.

Most definitely. I'm a musician, and I think that the album art can either turn people on or off to an album, especially if they're unfamiliar with the artist. Take Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for example. It's not like anyone didn't know who the Beatles were at that point, but the album became more than just that. It took on a whole other existence altogether, to become a piece of history.

Definitely! I am a graphic designer, its all about the 3 second rule, people will scan the shelves and if they spot something they like they will pick it up, often people know what music they like so I suppose sometimes it doesn't matter. My boyfriend has a huge collection of CDs and knows nothing of graphic design really, but he says he chooses them for the interesting designs even when he doesn't know what the music is like.

Not as much as it used to. Back in the day...when record albums were popular, the artwork was an essential part of the record. But now, with cds, I don't think the artwork is as important as it used to be.

Definitely. It usually makes me more likely to buy something if it is good than making me less likely to buy it if it is bad. But it definitely influences my impression of the artist and of that particular album. It doesnt have to be anything ground-breaking or new, but interesting and/or aesthetically pleasing.

I don 't know if that's true anymore. When vinyl albums were the norm, I would have said sure! but if you buy online (like iTunes), you don't even see the art really. And with CD's, it's so small.

agree with jude, it does help, especially if people not familiar with the musician / music.

with cool design cover, people will at least take a look at it - it's a start, but with ordinary cover people won't bother to take a look (unless the name / title is interesting), but - again - it's for unfamiliar musician / music
