The Ivy League schools are all private universities that are highly rated. They are among the most prestigious schools in the country. Seven of the eight schools were founded before the revolution (Cornell is the one tha twas founded later). All of the schools are in the northeastern United States.

Ten of the eleven schools in the Big Ten are large state universities. Northwestern is private -- and is considered close in quality to the Ivy League schools (similar to the quality of Stanford and Duke).

While most of the Big Ten schools are public universities -- they are among the best public universities in the US. Michigan is the highest rated of them -- with only Berkeley and Virginia being considered better state universities. Most of the schools in the Big Ten are located in the Upper Midwest and middle-eastern part of the country. Penn State is furthest East while Minnesota and Iowa are furthest west.

As athletic conferences, the Big Ten is a major conference -- frequently fielding the best teams in many sports. The Ivy League does not give athletic scholarships -- so has weak teams in mainstream sports like football and basketball. However, they frequently have all-America athletes in sports like fencing and squash.

A few points regarding what others have said here --

1. The claim was made that dumb kinds go to the schools in the Big 10. Being among the better Public Universities, you will find many very intelligent students at the Big Ten schools.

2. The claim was made that USC and University of Chicago are public univesities -- they are not. They are both highly ranked private universities.

3. The claim was made that only snotty rich kids go to Ivy League schools. This may have been tru 100 years ago -- but is far from true now. The majority of students going to Ivy League schools are middle class and get lots of aid to go there.

THis is an odd question.

For starters I think all the IVY league schools are private, and all the big 10 schools are public. Not sure about Northwestern.

Big 10 schools offer spend a ton of money on athletics, IVY league schools do not offer athletic scholarships.

IVY league schools are old for the most part.

Ivy league schools have better reputations for academics.

Ivy league schools are for rich snotty kids that think they're better then big 10 kids.

The big 10 is for drunken hotties.

Danny Ivyleague schools are the schools which are very old, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and thus have an improved academic level. While the top ten universities can also include public universities such as UCLA, UCB, USC, University of chicago, top ten gathers the overall scores of individual universities (teaching methods, test scores) and lists them from top ten.

ivy league suggests a finer academic level, big ten means they are not smart, but they have a nice football team. All depends on what you want out of your college.
