How can I tell which online college is legit (Paralegal)?

I am interested in going to school to pursue a carreer as a paralegal. I would prefer to take online classes. I am confused with choosing an online school because I know some of the schools only offer a certificate that doesn't really nessicaraily mean that your legit and its not as credible as taking classes at a college. How can I tell with the way they word it if the school is what I really want?

I have been working as a paralegal for many years, and I can tell you I have NEVER worked with someone who attended an online program. I don't think ANY solely online program is sufficient.

With regard to the ABA approval mentioned by a previous poster, the ABA's rules for approval EXCLUDE all solely online programs.

If you can swing it, the closest thing to an online program that is likely to be accepted is called a limited residency program. These can be approved by the ABA.

You definitely want a regionally accredited school, and if a school tells you it's licensed by some official-sounding government body, see if you can find out what types of schools the agency approves...there's at least one paralegal school in NY licensed by the NYS Education Department, which sounds good until you realize that agency primarily licenses hairdresser and bartending schools, and there are no ABA approved programs licensed by that agency.

Also watch out for programs that claim affiliation with a paralegal organization. Some do so without authority from the organization, and others create their own paralegal associations for the sole purpose of listing membership! There are some sneaks out there because the business of running a paralegal school is lucrative if you don't have the costs of a quality program.

I am searching for the same type of online program. There are several private and state organizations that will advise on individual accreditation for online schools. Try the American Bar Assoc. for starters. You can also do a geberal search for paralegal or legal assistant associations. There are several that have good information on chosing a school. Good luck.

Ask them one simple question - are you "regionally accredited" to give bachelor's degrees in paralegal or not. Yes or no.

If they say "no" or they waffle and try to tell you that being "regionally accredited" is not important, then run away as fast as you can, they are bogus.

I think you should look into programs at your local community college. They are more reliable and you will get a better training that will help you with your career.
