When someone makes fun of others, it is a reflection on themselves, not the other person.
Don't let it bother you. There will always be people who boost their ego by belittling others. You can't change them, so you must learn to pity them.

My first thought ... Ignorance and/or fear. Great question though...
Remember when you were a kid in elementary school and there was always that group that made fun of people to get a good laugh ... well, some people never grow out of that. The easiest way to get a laugh and the attention is always at someone else's expense. It's shitty but some people just get a kick out of others' pain. Someone i work with is like this ... he's just an ******, however when you understand where he is in life right now, it makes sense. He's got anger issues and gets his only laughs by making fun of his coworkers. Yeah, insecurity sometimes... and other times I just think people have become numb to it which makes them even worse than those with insecurities.

Because they did or said something humorous. Funny things happen that causes laughter -if the person who did the funny thing did not intend to there is no way the observer can know so they laugh. It is not meant to be abusive just a reaction to something funny.

Human nature- We all love to watch the down fall of others. Its just depends on you individual level of tolerance or psychopathy as to when it becomes toooooo uncomfortable.
