Trying to figure out why people today feel like they are entitled to a free ride is no easy answer. I think part of it is the way adults today were raised.

Before Social Security, a person worked or went hungry. Society frowned on people who didn't work and on those who were criminals.

Now, with all of the entitlements, Social Security, Welfare, Food Stamps, etc, people do not have to feel the repercussions of not being self reliant and have turned into the "gimme" generations.

The entertainment industry has turned criminal behavior into the desired behavior (aka roll models), adding to the "I don't have to work, I can just take it" attitude.

As long as we, as a society, reward people for not being self reliant, this will only get worse.

have anyone ever prefer to pay for the cow when they can get the milk for free? a person would not feel that they are entitled to a free ride, they feel the need to exploit the situation so that they come out on top. But there are also those who would act all high and mighty and choose to be 'altruistic', valuing other above their own. To me, it's hard to tell whether those people really mean it or if it's just an act, but it make identifying their pattern of behavior and uses it to your advantage easier, so exploit away.(thought having a back up plan when they take of their mask is a must)

It could be their parents or previous partner have spoilt them or just laziness.

They don't realise that for friendships to work, both people build up obligations to each other or more precisely expectations that favors will be returned and that these need to be kept in balance, close to 50:50 for the 2 people.
