i am a beauty therapist you dont need to place them in a microwave. A option is to put on the mask wrap the hands in cling - film to keep the heat in and so that the product will absorb more effectively into the skin, leave the mask on for 15mins. Then fill a sink with hot water place small towels in and wring them out and use these to remove the excess mask.

The microwave is a bit small for that I would have thought, put them in the tumble dryer for 20 minutes instead

I purely do if it includes tomato products, b/c those pop and splatter interior the m/w. for many issues, i take advantage of plastic wrap even with the indisputable fact that, to hold in warmth and keep rice/pasta from drying out.
