it sounds like the battery isn't holding a charge.
If it was the alternator, then the car would die regardless of whether or not you had your foot on the gas, but if your battery isn't holding a charge, then when you hold your foot on the gas, the alternator is working more to send higher voltage to the battery, and if the battery is bad, then essentially it means that your car is running off of the alternator. When you let your foot off of the gas, the alternator slows down, which means that it is sending less voltage to the battery, which if it isn't holding a charge, won't have enough 'juice' to power your car.
Go the 'free' route. Take your battery (or the whole car if you can make it) to autozone or any major auto parts store, and have them test your battery and alternator for FREE! That'll tell you for sure if it's either of those components before you spend any money.
Added bonus, if you buy a battery from one of those places, usually they'll install it for you for free right there on the spot!

Sounds like your alternator ... the battery only starts the car.. the alternator keeps the car going.
What's symbolic is that you had to jump the car to get it started. This indicates that there is something wrong with your battery mechanism.. .
So if you charged your car... (if it were your battery )then the jump should have lasted you until you at least turned it off.
But since it didn't .. you were actually lucky to get home.
take it to the mechanic.. but I would advise to buy the part yourself... it can be costly.

It may be a clogged fuel filter. You had to keep it revved high to get enough gas through the filter. Check with a mechanic.

IT sound to me you got fuel starvation problem non-of the above or your air filter is blocked and you don't get air into your engine let me know please fuel starvation is either a block filter or a blocked fuel line or it could be your intake manifold that is loose.
